      The name will tell you, the fake ones use words like, faux, glass, plastic, artificial, and manmade; real ones are either natural or cultured.

      If you take your pearl necklace into the sun or a bright light, you will be able to see differences in color and they won't all be perfectly matched if they're real. Whereas fake ones usually look perfect and all the same. You can also use a magnifying glass.

      Natural pearls have layers of nacre and cultured pearls have a shell core covered with a small layer of nacre about a millimeter thick. And fake pearls just have a core with coating on it. If you're able to, you can drill into it. But I suggest you don't, you don't want to ruin your pearls!
