Things You'll Need:
- a car you are comfortable driving
- low traffic practice areas
-
Step 1
Review the specific road skills that you will be examined on. In Massachusetts for example, you are tested on your ability to use hand signals, start and stop the vehicle, parallel park, back the vehicle approximately 50 feet, recognize and obey traffic signs/lights/signals and so on. States generally have similar road tests but you can view a detailed driving skills list on your local department of motor vehicle (DMV) website.
-
Step 2
Out of the list provided on your state's website, practice the skills you are least comfortable with. If you are still attending driving school let your driving instructor help you with these areas of concern. If you've finished drivers ed you can practice some of the more difficult skills with a parent or legal aged adult. Go to an empty parking lot and practice backing up in a straight line. Find a road with low traffic and try a 3 point turn (*see related article section for how to make 3 point turn*).
-
Step 3
Practice common problem areas. I remember my driving instructor telling me that even though you are examined on your driving skills as a whole, people who fail the exam often have trouble parallel parking and backing up 50 ft in a straight line. A common misconception is that you have to be right up close to the curb as you are backing up. It will be less nerve racking if you stay a few feet away from the curb and just focus on backing up in a straight line. On the parallel parking, you can still park about a foot away from the curb to play it safe. If you hit the curb on either of these tests you will lose points.
-
Step 4
If you feel it might help, you can familiarize yourself with the roads around your DMV building or test location. Most driving tests are given in close proximity to the test site. So drive around the area taking note of the various traffic signs in the area. On the day of your exam just relax and feed off the confidence you got from practicing your driving skills.
