How to Create a Basic Flowchart

Creating a basic flowchart may seem daunting at first but there really is not much to it. Start with an idea and add to the idea in boxes that flow in a logical manner. Flowcharts can be used for things such as showing the family tree, presenting the chain of command for employee complaints, or directions for operating the washing machine. Businesses such as the IRS and unemployment office use flowcharts to help people decide which form to use and whether they qualify. How do you create a basic flowchart?

Things You'll Need

• Computer
• Software-spreadsheet
• Printer
• Or paper and pen

Instructions

1. Draw a square or rectangle to begin your basic flowchart near the top or left side of the paper.

2. 

   Write inside the box. If this flowchart is a chain of command for a small church for example, the first box may have the word "pastor" written in it.

3. 

   Place lines protruding from the first box to the next set of boxes. The number of boxes you draw will depend on how many people are involved in the next level of command. With the church example, if the assistant pastor or youth pastor is the next person than you only need one line and one box.

4. 

   Identify the next individuals in the chain of command and determine how many there are. In our example, we will have five deacons so we must draw five boxes after the assistant pastor box and connect these five boxes with lines to the assistant pastor box.
