Auto rental agencies will try to squeeze you for every penny they can get!

An auto rental should be an easy, straightforward thing. The reality is however that auto rental agencies are trying to get as much money out of you as possible. Arm yourself with the proper knowledge when doing an auto rental to save yourself some headaches, and more importantly, some cash. Here are the most common auto rental scams. Be aware that, for the most part these aren't illegal, just enforcing the letter of their auto rental policy to the limit.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • You'll need to read the auto rental contract carefully
  1. Step 1

    -The auto rental contract-
The auto rental company can, and will charge you a fee if you pickup or return the auto rental early or late. They are well within their rights to do so. Make sure you pickup the auto rental on time, and drop it off on time. Stick to the times you contracted for to avoid fees.

  2. Step 2

-Notify the auto rental company if your plans change-
n auto rental company will charge you a 'no show' fee if you don't actually pick up the auto rental. Make sure you inform the auto rental agency if your plans change. Don't give them an excuse to charge you this fee.

  3. Step 3

    -Auto rental insurance?-
Some less than honest auto rental agencies will attempt to make you buy additional auto insurance. If you already have car insurance you do NOT need this. DO NOT let them talk you into this. Speak to a manager, call their regional office or find another auto rental agency. There is no law that says you must buy their insurance.

  4. Step 4

    -Returning the auto rental-
Make sure the fuel tank is full when you return the auto rental car. These days an auto rental company WILL charge you a refill fee if the auto rental car fuel gauge is not on F by even the tiniest amount. To be safe top it off, keep the receipt, and drive the auto rental directly to the lot. Of course make sure you drop off the auto rental at the time you specified in the contract to avoid more fees.

Tips & Warnings
  • Fill the tank and keep the receipt when returning the auto rental
  • Return the auto rental at the time specified on your contract
  • DO NOT buy auto rental insurance, you are not required to by law if you already have car insurance.
