1
Consult with a travel planner to learn about the islands. Contact a travel agent to inquire about package specials that include hotel, rental car, tour group events and discounts to particular sites of interest.
-
2
Visit the official Hawaii Tourism website. You'll find an enormous amount of information and can weed through the possibilities according to subject, location, suitability for children or adults, and pricing.
-
-
3
View a Hawaii travel book from a bookstore or library. Start with those places closest to your interests. If, for example, you appreciate culture and history, look up information about the Bishop Museum and Iolani Palace -- the only official state residence of royalty in the U.S. Near the Iolani Palace is the Mission Houses Museum, which interprets the "missionary period" of 1820 to 1863. You'll also find other historic places such as the Pearl Harbor memorials listed in most guide books.
-
4
Check information provided by individual hotels. They often offer tour packages for various outings, such as finding hidden beaches, snorkeling Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, horseback riding, diving tours and more.
-
5
Look for special tour information centered on special annual events, such as Honolulu's annual Merrie Monarch Festival.

Tips & Warnings
You'll be in Hawaii, so avoid doing the kinds of things you could do anywhere else. Some people spend their entire vacation in Waikiki shopping, for example, and completely miss the rare and beautiful sites.
To get a true sense of the island, get out of downtown Honolulu -- after visiting the highlights that appeal to you most.
If you like sports, you can also bicycle, catamaran, surf, sail, boogie board, ride horses and more. But again, if you do these on the coast of California, try for something new and different.
Look for brochures pertinent to the arts, or tours such as to the Dole Plantation.
If you know people who live on Oahu, get their input for the best places to visit.
Wear your sunscreen while in Hawaii. Too many tourists skip this and end up lying flat on their backs for their entire holiday. You'll be a lot happier if you take in nominal sunshine and screen up. Hats are also advised.
For hiking and beach combing, wear good shoes and take along plenty of water.
