With all the condom choices out there and disease floating around it's hard to know exactly just what to buy. There are so many possibilities and for anyone just beginning to buy condoms it is overwhelming.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First you will want to know if you or your partner has a latex allergy. If so you will need to get polyurethane condoms. If you tend to live an exciting lifestyle you might consider carrying latex and polyurethane on hand so you can accommodate any partner.

  2. Step 2

I think a common mistake with people who use condoms is that they only keep one on hand for nights out on the prowl. This is a terrible mistake. The condom maybe faulty and one condom isn't enough for long intimate sessions.

  3. Step 3

Now you will want to decide if you need that condom lubed or with spermicide. Condoms with spermicide acts as a back up just in case some sperm escapes. The draw back to condoms with spermicide is that there are some side effects to some people such as irritation, burning and increase chances of developing infections of the urinary tract and yeast. Condoms with spermicide should be stored at room temperature, out of heat and sunlight.

A pre-lubricated condom can make the condom more durable and less likely to break.

If you use a non-lubricated condom be sure that if you do apply lube that it is safe for condom use. Certain lubes and lotions can eat holes into the condom such as petroleum jelly. Petroleum jelly should never be used as lube with or without a condom since it traps bacteria.

  4. Step 4

There are all sorts of sizes and designs available this days. You will want to buy condoms that are a bit larger than the wearer but not overly big. To small of a condom with increase the chance of breaking and leaking. To big will increase the chance of slipping, falling off and leaking. Go to website that specialize in selling condoms. Most will list the size of the condom on the details. Some will even give measurements to what size they are perfect for.

When shopping for condoms keep your needs in mind. There are some that enhance pleasure for him or her and there are even some to delay the orgasm to make the fun last longer. Some look down right silly with twisted heads and prickly things sticking out all over to even ones that vibrate and are flavored. If you or your partner tend to be less sensitive when using condoms buy some ultra thin condoms. Beware of condoms that are marked for novelty use only. This means they are only for fun and not protection.

  5. Step 5

To obtain condoms you can buy them at nearly any supermarket, discount store, convenience store, sex shop and drug stores. There are drug stores online and websites that just sell condoms. Most websites that offer condoms will have rating systems so you can read what users have to say about them. If you are embarrassed to go into a store to buy them I suggest you buy them online. It doesn't come in a box marked condoms. Your mail carrier will not even know what is inside.

  6. Step 6

Please check the expiration date on the condoms before buying if possible and certainly before using. Most condoms have a shelf life of 2-5 years if the seal is not broken. If the seal is broken discard the condom. After opening a condom it should be thrown away if not being used right then. After air reaches the condom it will dry it out and make it rip, tear, dry rot and not work properly. Never use an out of date condom, in fact don't use one that is approaching an expiration date.

  7. Step 7

If you can not afford condoms or can not obtain them because of other reason these are very available at places like the local health department and planned parenthood. There are also other clinics and schools that provide them free of charge!

  8. Step 8

If you are a sexually active female I would like to also suggest that you carry condoms as well. This way you can be prepared when he isn't and as an added bonus you can always suggest to use yours if you don't like the type he has picked out.

Tips & Warnings
  • I am neither for or against premarital sex but I am for safe sex!
  • There are natural skin condoms that are latex free but the best of my knowledge the polyurethane are more reliable.
  • Do NOT by condoms at salvage markets. You never know how long they have been sitting in a hot warehouse or if they have been recalled.

on 10/15/2009 I would just add, that buying online versus buying in a store is much better, because you can look up the description, buy in large quantities and ask for advice.

on 3/17/2009 Actually Durex XXL's are 9.5 inches long ;o)and any man who needs more protection than that has my sympathy because it will be a rare occasion that they get to feel the pleasure of full penetration, *L* And I agree with you that the only sex everyone should absolutely condone is SAFE SEX!!!

on 3/15/2009 while this article is very informative, I have been unable to find large enough condoms. The Durex XXL covers only to about 8" and is 2" too short. Thanks for a much needed article.
