Prevent cavities and tooth decay by following these simple guidelines.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Dental Floss
  • Dentist
  1. Step 1

Tooth decay, that leads to cavities and other dental ailments, is a totally preventable condition. However, widespread tooth decay and dental disease is present in many areas of the United States today. Lack of education about the causes of tooth decay and a general lack of interest in cavity prevention, causes the problem of dental decay and disease to be widespread and rampant. You can decrease your own risk of cavities and tooth decay by following some of the steps listed below.

  2. Step 2
    Avoid Sugary Sodas!
    Avoid Sugary Sodas!

Refrain from constantly sipping on sugary drinks. Many people, especially teens, constantly sip on high fructose sodas and drinks throughout the day. This constant bombardment of sugary solution bathes your teeth and creates the perfect food source for cavity causing bacteria. This problem was just recently profiled on a TV special and it was cleverly named "Mountain Dew Mouth". It's much better to drink a serving of a sugary beverage at one setting and then practice some preventive dental care, such as brushing your teeth or rinsing your mouth. Another option is to switch to sugar free or diet drinks that contain no sugar.

  3. Step 3
    Snack on an Apple Instead!

Substituting fresh fruit or vegetables as a snack instead of soft and sugary foods can help to prevent dental decay. The friction of the chewing process helps to break up bacterial colonies living on your teeth and this makes them easier to wash away with a simple glass of water.

  4. Step 4
    Brush Often!
    Brush Often!

It's always a good idea to brush your teeth after every meal, but we all know that in our busy society, time for teeth brushing isn't always available. Another option is to rinse your mouth after eating or drinking cavity promoting foods to help clear food residue away from the surface of your teeth. A simple swig of water can help to protect your teeth and prevent cavity formation.

  5. Step 5
    Chew Sugarless Gum!

Another cavity fighting step is to chew sugarless gum. Chewing gum encourages your natural saliva production and that helps to keep tooth surfaces free of bacterial buildup. Keep a pack of gum handy for use after meals or sugary snacks.

  6. Step 6
    Make Regular Dental Visits!

Finally, regular dental visits can go a long way to preventing tooth decay and cavity formation. Many people procrastinate and put off their trips to the dentist due to the inconvenience and fear associated with dental care. However, many dental techniques have changed for the better and regular dental care can be part of a routine that can help you prevent the onset of cavities and dental disease.
