Things You'll Need:
- Green food coloring
- gold coin candy
- black cauldron/pot
- shamrock confetti
- green feather boa
- shamrock garland
- shamrock balloons
- green ink pad
-
Step 1
load up on gold coinsHave your itinerary set and ready to go so that when your little ones are tucked in on St. Pat's eve, you can be visited by leprechauns. Being a St. Pat's baby, myself, I had the distinct pleasure of receiving hand-written notes from my leprechaun friend when I was a kid. That was some 35 or so years ago when this holiday wasn't nearly as commercialized as it is now; now there is a virtual myriad of products you can use to really play it up. Or keep it low key, the choice is yours, but let the magic begin! If you have pets, you might need to alter some of these ideas so they don't eat the goodies strewn around all over the place.
-
Step 2
pick out a few pots, tooGo to the party store and find bags of gold coins and black cauldrons or pots; get one per kid. Get extra bags of coins so you can use them as trails to find pots of gold. Or instead of using the coins, use the shamrock confetti to make a trail down the hall into a room where your child can spot the pot of gold! Either fill the pot with a bag of gold coins or their favorite bubble gum, or a small gift.
-
Step 3
shamrock garlandStrategically place strands of garland around light fixtures or chairs in the kitchen, or even wrap some around the faucets in the bathrooms. Be fun and festive--leprechaun style! In the morning put green food coloring into the toilet bowls, showing they did their business, but forgot to flush. Your kids will be so impressed by this!
-
Step 4
Fun with Feathers!Drape a green, feather boa around your daughter's dressing table, or casually adorn the banister--let your imagination run as wild and free as the Irish countryside! If you want to make a different kind of trail, you can cut the feathers off and use that for the kids to traipse around after; makes for easier pickup than the metal confetti pieces which you will see in July under some furniture!
-
Step 5
Kool Aid's here, bringin' ya fun!Tell your kids the leprechauns turned the orange juice green or prepare some Kool Aid, and tell them they made the water turn green! Maybe have your kids make some slice/bake Pillsbury cookies the night before and leave them out for the leprechauns, if they suspect a leprechauning of sorts the evening of the 16th.
-
Step 6
St. Patrick's Day is F-U-NTie some shamrock balloons out by the mailbox or on the backs of the kids' chairs for a fun, decorative touch.
-
Step 7
green ink is at your local craft storeThe best part would be to either leave them a small shamrock plant, or write them a note using your left hand (if you are a righty) or vice versa, and then, at the end, where you would sign your leprechaun's name, using just your pinky, make five, closely-placed green finger prints, by pressing your pinky/ies into the green ink pad. Be certain to scrub it off, as to avoid any suspicion by your kids! For a fun-filled activity later in the afternoon, bake cupcakes in shamrock liners or make cut-out cookies, dipped in green icing!
