Things You'll Need:
- Computer
- Word Processing or Publishing Software
-
Step 1
Decide what your newsletter is going to be about.
If you own a business, think of what types of sections you can incorporate into the newsletter. Perhaps a new employee spotlight section, calender of events, etc...
If you are developing a newsletter for a group (like the PTA or a book club), then you will also have different sections. -
Step 2
After you have brainstormed some sections that will become regular in each newsletter, decide how to format your newsletter.
Will it be a page, front and back? Or maybe two pages, front and back.
Or will you have an e-newsletter and just send it via email to all subscribers? -
Step 3
Now the fun part - you get to think of a name for your newsletter. Try to keep it short and witty. You can try to incorporate the name of the business or organization in a way that is creative and memorable.
-
Step 4
Figure out how often your newsletter will go out.
Will it be a monthly newsletter? Or a quarterly newsletter? Will you have enough material to keep printing out new issues for your chosen intervals? -
Step 5
For your first newsletter, you should introduce the purpose of the newsletter and ask for comments from the subscribers.
Learning about your audience will give you some ideas on new articles or information to be presented in future newsletters.
Asking for contributions by way of articles and pictures is another section of your newsletter that you can incorporate into each section.
Remember, each newsletter will need fresh material, which can be a lot of work, so if you get your subscribers involved, it will reduce the workload and also keep the newsletter interactive. -
Step 6
On your computer, bring up Microsoft Word or another processing program. If you are using Microsoft Word, www.microsoft.com has templates of newsletters that you can download to get started.
-
Step 7
Personalize the template with your newsletter name, logo, tagline, etc...
-
Step 8
Now get started on writing out the main newsletter articles. After writing the main articles, start filling in the different sections that you brainstormed in Step 1.
-
Step 9
If you have more material, then consider saving it for the next newsletter or maybe add another page to the newsletter so that it can hold all of your information.
-
Step 10
Proofread and print off the number of copies you need. And viola you have just figured out how to start a newsletter.
Now get busy writing for the next issue!
