Ever wondered the meaning behind the sign of the cross? Ever wondered exactly what is done? Noticed someone making an odd gesture in a Catholic Church? Here is your answer!

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Form your fingers into a group of three fingers {traditionally the thumb, index, and middle fingers are used}. It is optional to moisten the fingers with holy water prior to step number two.

  2. Step 2

    Touch the center of your forehead with your fingers, while saying "In the name of the Father"

  3. Step 3

    Touch the center of your Chest with the fingers and say "and of the Son"

  4. Step 4

    Touch your left breast with your fingers and say "and of the Holy"

  5. Step 5

    Touch right breast with your fingers and say "Spirit"

  6. Step 6

    Make a small cross with your thumb and index finger, bring to mouth and kiss the cross. This is done to honor Christ's death on the Cross.

  7. Step 7

    You have now made the Sign of the Cross.

Tips & Warnings
  • The sign of the cross is made at any time, but especially at the end of prayers, when passing churches or cemeteries, or when an ambulance siren is heard.
  • It is also traditionally made when entering a Catholic Church, with the additional step of dipping one's fingers in holy water first. This is done as a blessing of oneself.
