Tree roots and free-form flower beds can be a landscaping headache. A stack of newspapers (and a bag or two of mulch) can easily rid you of weeding and weedeating those difficult spots.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • old newspapers
  • a garden rake
  • a bag of mulch
  • water
  1. Step 1

Take sheets of newspaper and place between the surface tree roots, up to the tree's trunk, and beyond the visible root parameters (do not cover the roots or the tree's base--this could cause it harm)

  2. Step 2

After layering a few sheets on top of each other, drench the newspaper in water; when it dries, it forms a paper pulp "shell" between the roots.

  3. Step 3

Layer mulch between the roots and around the root perimeter, over the newspaper until it's no longer visible. Use the back of a rake to spread it around--just be careful not to tear your newspaper. The newspaper should prevent most weeds from surfacing, while the mulch conceals it attractively.

  4. Step 4

Rock or gravel the border of the mulch if so desired, or leave natural. Simply remove any stray weeds that spring up. If the newspaper tears open, patch it with a couple of new, damp patches, let dry and cover.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always leave the visible roots exposed, along with the base of the trunk.
  • Adapt this method to surround flowers without beds, shrubs, and other plants that might be scattered through your yard.
