Pick out the paint color. This is the fun part of decorating. Do you want your counter to have slate look? Pick a charcoal color paint.

  2. Step 2

Sand the Formica counter with 150-grit sandpaper. This will roughen the surface, so the paint adheres to the laminate. Take a cloth and remove the dust.

  3. Step 3

Use TSP cleaner to get rid of any dirt or grease on the counter top. Then, tape off edges. Tape where the counter meets with the back splash or the kitchen wall.

  4. Step 4

Use a 4 inch roller and apply primer for nonporous surfaces. Once primer is dry. Use a 4 inch roller and paint a coat of acrylic latex enamel. Let that dry. When the first coat of paint is dry, apply a second coat.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you allow all coats time to dry.
  • Protect your painted counter by always using cutting boards etc..
  • The paint will not last forever. But, until you can afford to change out your counter, this is a great way to update the look.
  • TSP cleaner is very strong. Wear gloves and follow dilution instructions on container. It ensures that the paint will adhere to the surface you're painting.
