Things You'll Need:
- gutter parts
- ladder
- chalk line
- tape measure
- drill with screwdriver bit
- hacksaw or chop saw
-
Step 1
Gutters need to be at a slight angle with the lowest points at the downspouts. At the point furthest from the downspout, measure 1/2 down from the eaves and make a mark. At the downspout point, measure down at least 1/2 inch plus 1/8 inch for every 10 feet from your starting point. Run a chalk line between these points and snap the line.
-
Step 2
Assemble as much as the gutter as you can on the ground, including the end cap, corners, and outlets. Put hanging hooks on the gutters every 2 feet.
-
Step 3
Have an assistant hold the gutter in place. Starting at a corner, or in the middle of the run, screw the hanging hooks into the chalk line. Don't screw too tight; the gutter should be able to move a bit.
-
Step 4
Before hanging, attach the drop outlet to the last section of gutter. Measure the distance to the end of the eaves and cut a piece of gutter to that length. Attach this to the drop outlet and hang the drop outlet.
-
Step 5
Join sections using connectors and adjust for expansion according to your vinyl manufacturer's instructions.
-
Step 6
If the water from the gutter needs to be diverted to a point other than directly below the outlet, you will need to add elbows to the downspout. Assemble the elbows and the piece between them. Cut a downspout of the length between the lower elbow to 6-8 inches above the ground. Test fit the entire assembly.
-
Step 7
Screw a downspout hangerto the house a few inches above the end of the downspout. Attach the downspout to the gutter and hanger. Attach an elbow and small length of downspout to direct the water away from the house foundation.
