Home security can come from various sources and devices. One of the simplest forms of security is an undetectable security system. Web cameras have the ability to track motion and work with either infrared lasers or motion anomalies to act as a security system. Rather than creating a laser from scratch and dealing with difficult kits, hooking up a Web camera and downloading the appropriate program will have the same outcome. This will result in a cheap undetected form of security using household products.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Web camera Computer Capturing software or Rise Sun
  1. Step 1

Hook up a Web camera to a computer with a USB cable. With the completion of the automatic drivers being installed to a computer, software with motion capturing abilities will then need to be downloaded.

  2. Step 2

Download and install the software that comes with the Web camera or download Rise Sun, which is a free Web camera program.

  3. Step 3

Start Rise Sun and it will automatically adjust the Web camera to the lighting. The green dots shown on the video capturing section are the motion detecting lasers. Each green dot is a point of motion that has been picked up from the Web camera and software. Similar programs may detect motion but not show the points of motion being detected.

  4. Step 4

Select "Enable Alarm Trigger" and "Enable Alarm Warning" located on the left of the main interface, until they display a red "X" next to them. This will allow the Web camera to take pictures of anything breaking its still frame with motion and not sound an alarm.

  5. Step 5

Click on "Application Settings" and choose what folder the photos will appear in when the motion sensor goes off. Pictures will now automatically be saved to this folder each time something sets the alarm off. Anything that moves past the camera will set off the silent laser alarm.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some Web cameras come with software that detects motion. Altering the sensitivity level on Rise Sun will make it less likely to capture an intruder.
  • Do not hide the Web camera. Web cameras are commonly found in homes and do not need to be hidden.
