How to Apply for US Government Jobs

Applying for a U.S. government job has become easier since the creation of a centralized website for all government job announcements. Each government agency uses USAJobs.gov to post their job openings and, according to the website, there are typically about 25,000 jobs advertised at any given time. Potential job seekers can also create a resume and apply for most jobs directly through the site. Given the vast number of jobs available, the application process for each one may vary slightly. Be sure to follow all instructions carefully, as incomplete applications will not be considered.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the USAJobs website and click on "Get Started," followed by "Create an Account." Enter the required personal information, including name, address, phone number and email. You will be asked to create a username and password and confirm that you are a United States citizen. Click "Submit."

    • 2

Follow the prompts to create a resume. You can either copy and paste content from your current resume into the required fields or type directly into the fields. Unfortunately, the site does not allow you to upload an existing resume. Be prepared to provide information on your employment history, educational background and any military service. You will also need to provide your Social Security number. Once you are finished, click "Save."

    • 3

Return to the USAJobs homepage and click "Get Started," followed by "Look For a Job." Enter the search criteria you would like, including job location, category and salary range, and then click "Search for Jobs."

    • 4

Click on a job announcement that interests you. Each announcement will feature several pages of information on the job, including the duties, qualifications, benefits and how to apply.

    • 5

Read the information under "How to Apply" carefully because the application process will vary based on the job and the hiring agency. Most agencies will allow you to apply online, but it depends on the job.

    • 6

Follow the instructions for your particular job opening. If the agency allows an online application, click "Apply Online" at the bottom of the page and submit your resume. Some may require you to fax or email several required forms. If so, you can access the required forms under the "How to Apply" page.

    • 7

Print out the job announcement so you have a copy for your records. Make a note of the closing date--this is the date when applications will stop being accepted. If the agency is interested in you as a potential candidate, you will be contacted within 15 to 30 days after the closing date.
