Choose which guard you want to use. There are usually many different guard sizes that come with a set of clippers, and all of them cut the hair to different lengths. The lengths are usually printed inside the hair guard. As a good rule of thumb, its is always best to start clipping your hair using the longest guard, working your way down to the length of hair you want. Once you decide on a guard, snap it into place and you can start clipping.

Prepare yourself by wrapping a towel around your shoulders to prevent hair from falling all over you. Always clip you hair when it is dry, so make sure that you do not have any wet hairs by drying your hair off with a towel. Plug in and turn on your clippers. They will vibrate, but this is normal. Start clipping your hair anywhere you like on your head, always clipping in the opposite direction from the hair growth. Move the clippers around your head, keeping the guard parallel to your head surface. Once all of the hair is clipped, you can trim the ears.

To trim around the ears, take off your guard. Be extremely careful when the clippers have no guard on because the blade is near the surface of the blade cover. Carefully trim around the ears, following the ear as a guide. Trim slowly and deliberately. Trimming too much hair around the ears can make your head look lopsided. After you have finished trimming around the ears, and all of your hair has been clipped, use a broom to sweep up any hair that you clipped.

Never submerge your clippers into water. Be very careful when trimming your hair without a guard on. Keep clippers out of the reach of children.
