Replacement toner cartridges for laser printers often cost up to $100 a piece. Using a refill kit, one of these cartridges can be recycled for as little as $10, and a single cartridge can be refilled as many times as the user needs.

A laser toner refill kit for your specific model of cartridge is required, since toner amounts and required accessories vary from one cartridge design to the next. Some cartridges require a chip to be replaced before the laser printer will recognize the refilled cartridge as being full. If one of these is required, it will be included with your kit.

These refill kits can be purchased at specialty online retailers, as well as some retail cartridge stores.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Refill kit for your model of toner cartridge Tweezers
  1. Step 1

Open the front of the laser printer by pulling the front panel open. Locate the toner cartridge, and release the latch that holds it in place. This will usually consist of two plastic tabs located on either side of the cartridge. Remove it by pulling directly towards you, and lay it on a flat work surface.

  2. Step 2

Consult the documentation that came with the refill kit for specific refill locations. Many cartridges will have a removable plug or cap specifically designed for refills. If there is no existing fill location, the kit will come with a hand-drill. Place it in the location marked in the instructions, and turn it clockwise until a hole has been bored through the surface.

  3. Step 3

Remove the cap from the toner refill bottle, and pour the entire contents through the refill hole. When done, discard the bottle. Replace the plug or cap. If a hole was drilled, use one of the hole-sealing stickers included in the refill kit, or a regular piece of clear tape to keep the toner from spilling out.

  4. Step 4

Slide the cartridge's chip out of its socket using a small pair of tweezers. Slide the replacement back in the same way the old one came out. If the refill kit didn't come with one of these chips, then replacement won't be necessary. Insert the cartridge back into the printer, and print as normal.

Tips & Warnings
  • A cartridge can be refilled as many times as needed.
  • Never try to refill a cartridge that is still in the printer.
