How to Get a Patent Application
Getting a patent is an important step toward protecting an invention, even if the idea is not fully developed yet and is merely a set of instructions, plans and other documents such as blueprints. Patenting can be a detailed process in most countries, but the first step is getting a patent application. There are several ways to do this, especially with the Internet, as well as firms that specialize in applying for patents for individuals and companies.

1
Visit the website "Provisional Application for Patent" (see Resources) to obtain full instructions (including current fees), required documents, and an application to apply for a patent in the United States.
-
2
Call the United States Patent and Trademark Office at (800) 786-9199 with any questions regarding getting or completing a patent application, as an alternative to using the Internet for applications and instructions.
-
-
3
Write a letter to Commissioner for Patents, P.O. Box 1450, Alexandria, VA 22313-1450 to get a patent application, as another alternative.
-
4
Secure the services of a company that will complete the patent application process on your behalf, as an alternative to doing it yourself. (There are some links noted in the Resources section.) Most companies that complete patent applications for clients charge $200 on top of U.S. Government fees, which are usually about $110.
-
5
Consider obtaining a free consultation with a patent attorney before getting started on your application. If you do decide to secure a patent lawyer's services, he will obtain and complete the application for a patent on your behalf. Some attorneys work on contingency, or charge less than $2,000 for the entire legal process.
