How to Install a D-Link RangeBooster N Wireless Router

The D-Link RangeBooster N is a wireless router designed for use with a cable or DSL modem. It is capable of supporting 802.11n, 802.11g, 802.3 and 802.3u wireless devices. Installation of a RangeBooster N will enable your wireless devices to take advantage of your existing high-speed Internet connection, share data and play games with the other computers on your network. The procedure for installing a D-Link RangeBooster N wireless router is very simple and is easily completed in under an hour.

      Choose a location for your router. Select an area that is as open and centralized as possible.

      Turn off your modem and your computer and locate the Ethernet cable connecting both devices. Disconnect the Ethernet cable from your computer and plug it into the router.

      Plug one end of an unused Ethernet cable into one of the LAN ports on your router. Plug the remaining end into your computer. Turn on your modem and wait approximately 1 minute.

      Plug one end of the router's power cord into an available electrical outlet; plug the remaining end into the router. Wait approximately 1 minute.

      Turn on your computer and wait for all the lights on the router to activate. Insert the setup CD that came packaged with your router. Click "Install Router" and follow the onscreen instructions.

      Open your Web browser and navigate to the following address: 192.168.0.1. Select "Admin" from the drop-down menu and leave the password field blank. Click the "Log In" button. Follow the onscreen directions. Once this step is complete, you will be able to access the Internet through your router.

  • You may purchase the RangeBooster N wireless router directly from the D-Link website (see Resources below). If you no longer have the setup CD that came packaged with your router, you can download the appropriate software from the D-Link website (see Resources below). When you run the installation software, you will be asked to choose a login password for your router. Make a note of this password for future use.

  • Do not attempt to configure your router using a wireless connection; use an Ethernet connection as directed above. When choosing a location for your router, avoid small, closed-in areas such as closets or attics. Choose an area with easy access and plenty of ventilation. When using a wireless connection, the number of walls and ceilings between your router and your computer may affect the quality of your connection.
