Christmas is a joyous time and a time for sending out cards to friends and loved ones. Make your cards extra special and memorable this year by creating 3D pop-up cards. You can choose from a wide variety of Christmas themes, objects and symbols. By making these yourself, you can customize them for each person and show them how much you care, plus it's a fun craft to do alone or with kids.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Construction paper Card stock Pencil Glue stick Scissors Christmas stencils Markers or colored pencils 3D paper mounting tape
  1. Step 1

Think about the theme of your Christmas card and choose a color of card stock that will be appropriate. Fold the card stock sheet in half. Smooth the edge carefully making sure to create a strong crease.

  2. Step 2

Using a stencil or freehand if you have the skills draw out your Christmas objects/symbols on colored construction paper. Carefully cut these out. Decorate the front with a couple symbols or shapes. Peel off the protective backing from a piece of 3D paper mounting tape. Stick it to the back of each object or shape. Gently push it onto the cut out. Peel back the other protective backing sticker. Press onto the cover of the card.

  3. Step 3

Trace and cut out more shapes for the inside of the card where the pop up will come into play. Cut a strip of construction paper. Fold it in to 1-inch sections, alternating back and forth so it becomes an accordion fold. Make one of these for each pop up object in the card. Press these into a single accordion fold. Place a heavy object on top of it and leave it on the accordion fold for two minutes.

  4. Step 4

Remove the heavy object and cover one end of the folded segment with glue from a glue stick. Press it onto the inside of the card and hold in place for at least 20 seconds to make sure it sticks and dries completely. On the opposite end of the accordion fold, cover the end with glue and press the Christmas symbol or cut out object on the end. Hold in place for several seconds to make sure it sticks.

  5. Step 5

Write your greetings in marker or colored pencil on the front cover and inside. Keep the card closed so that when the recipient opens it, the pop-up accordion spring will still be strong and work correctly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Design the cover on the computer and print out before you add the 3D pop-up inside the card for a more professional look
  • Don't open the card too quickly or you may tear the pop-up backing
