Do a Hot Stone Massage

Hot stone massages are extremely popular. They are wonderful for your body not just because of their ability to relax you, but the heat penetrates your muscles and can help many health problems. Hot stone massages can be expensive in a spa, but it is not difficult to give one at home.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Basalt stones Slow cooker Towels Massage or baby oil Tongs or a slotted spoon Hot water
  1. Step 1

Prepare your stones. Your stones should be rinsed and oiled before the first use. Heat your water in a slow cooker and add the stones. Remove the stones when they are warm, and dry them completely with a towel. Stones of different sizes will heat differently, so monitor them closely to make sure they are warm but not too hot.

  2. Step 2

Place your stones. Always test the stones on yourself first. If the stones are too hot, place a towel or sheet between the stones and skin. Place your larger stones on the larger muscles and the lower back. The stones can be placed anywhere the person receiving the massage wants them. Medium stones can be placed in the palms and smaller stones can be placed between the fingers and toes.

  3. Step 3

Begin the massage. Massage with your hands or a medium stone. If you are massaging with a stone, remove the stones from the area, and carefully and slowly run the warm stone over the skin. The heat penetrates and relaxes the muscles, so remember to use a light touch. Follow the lead of the person receiving the massage.

  4. Step 4

Replace the stones as needed. Some stones may cool off while you're working and will need to be replaced with warm ones. Keep stones heating so that you'll always have replacements.

  5. Step 5

Use stones on the extremities. Hot stones are relaxing for the arms, legs, hands and feet. Run a hot stone along the soles of the feet or very gently on the back of the neck.

  6. Step 6

Clean and store your stones. Wash your stones with an antibacterial cleanser and dry them completely. Store them in an area where they will remain clean and safe until the next use.
