Things You'll Need:
- Car speakers Screwdriver Panel tool
-
Step 1
Select new speakers for your car. There are many sizes of car speakers, both factory installed and aftermarket. To ensure you'll get the right size speakers for your car, it's important to start with the right information. Be sure you know the year, make and model of your car. Go to a trusted car audio retailer. One of the best online sources for speakers and information is crutchfield.com (see link in Resources). Its website has tools that will identify the correct speaker size for specific vehicles and even sort particular brands.
-
Step 2
Remove the door panel for your door or the speaker grille covering the speakers. Some cars require removing the entire door panel, while others just the grille covering the door speakers. Crutchfield.com provides free instructions with speaker purchase for virtually every car it sells speakers for. ehow.com also has instructions on how to remove the door panel for many car models (see link in Resources).
-
Step 3
Take out the old speakers, using a screwdriver to loosen the screws. In some cases the speakers are secured in with bolts. Unclip the speaker wires from the old speaker.
-
Step 4
Connect the new speaker to the car's wiring. Many electronics retailers will provide vehicle-specific clips that connect the new speaker to the factory-wiring clips. If you don't have these, you'll need to clip the connectors off and attach the wires to the new speakers' tabs.
-
Step 5
Mount the new speaker, using the screws and holes from the old speakers' mounting. Test the speaker.
-
Step 6
Replace the door panel or the speaker grilles.
