Instructions

1
Pour a one-inch layer of sand into your incense burner. The incense burner should have three legs to keep it from burning the surface underneath, and to be more traditionally accurate.
-
2
Light the taper candle.

-
3
Use the lit candle to light a charcoal tablet. Hold the charcoal over the flame with tweezers until it glows. You can also light the charcoal directly with a match or lighter but sometimes the candle method is easier because it can take a while for the charcoal to get going.
-
4
Set the charcoal in the sand in your incense burner with the tweezers.
-
5
Fan the charcoal with a feather until it glows steadily without crackling. You can blow on it or use something else to fan it, but the feather is traditional.
-
6
Set the incense on top of the charcoal. The tablet may have a small indentation on top for this purpose. Now the resin will begin to burn and let off its scent.

Tips & Warnings
Submerse your tablet in water with tweezers after burning or it may continue to smolder for up to two hours, creating a fire hazard and wasting your charcoal.
This could be a fire hazard. Never leave it burning unattended or place it near flammable materials.
