Play a Second Inversion C Major Triad on the 6th String

The second inversion C major triad on the sixth string is so named because it has the fifth of the chord, the note G, in the bass of the voicing. This added bass note greatly expands the depth of this chord as compared to the open-position C chord most of us know. By learning to play this chord, you can add a second sonic dimension to any song you know that contains a C chord or voicing.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

How to Play a Second Inversion C Major Triad on the 6th String

  1. Step 1

Position the left-hand middle finger on the third fret of the sixth string to sound the note G, which is the fifth of the chord.

  2. Step 2

Place the left-hand ring finger on the third fret of the fifth string to sound the root of the chord, the note C.

  3. Step 3

Position the left-hand index finger on the second fret of the third string. This is the note E, which is the third of the chord.

  4. Step 4

Strum all three notes to sound the second inversion C major triad on the sixth string.

  5. Step 5

Make sure to miss striking the top three strings of the guitar as those notes, G, B and E, are not a part of this chord.

Tips & Warnings
  • Curving the left-hand ring finger will ensure that the note E, on the third string, rings through loud and clear.
