How to Measure Snowboard Length

How to Measure Snowboard Length thumbnail
Proper snowboard length is very important.

One of the most important factors in purchasing a new snowboard is getting the correct size. Size is a major determinant in how well a board is able to perform for you. Purchasing a board that is too small or too large can cause serious control and stability issues that will make snowboarding less fun and possibly dangerous.

Use a measuring tape. If you're wondering how snowboard length is derived, it's usually a point-to-point measurement from the tip to tail. Measurements are provided in centimeters, so a "161" is 161cm from tip to tail. If, for some reason, the board is not clearly marked, this is how you'd establish its length.

Determine your size. The numbered size of a snowboard is a useless figure unless you know the size that you need. If you're new to snowboarding, you probably have no idea. The snowboard size required by a given rider is based primarily on height and weight, with some secondary emphasis on what type of riding will be done. Refer to manufacturer's guidelines for recommended sizes based on your height and weight.

Rough it. If you're of average weight, a simple rule for determining size is that the snowboard should come up between your chin and nose. Stay on the smaller side for freestyle riding and go longer for freeriding and powder riding. If you're a beginner, aim for a smaller board between your chest and chin. Because this rough measurement doesn't take weight into account, it's not useful if you're over or under average weight for your height.

Tips & Warnings

  • When sizing a snowboard, don't forget to consider width. You want a board that will fit your boots without too much overhang or space between your boot and the edge. For best results, measure the boot on the board directly to see how the width works for you.

  • When snowboard shopping, look for a stamped number in the center of the board, on the edge, on top or in the graphics somewhere, to find the snowboard length.
