Use a Printing Calculator

Printing calculators, which are alternatively known as adding machines, work slightly differently than normal calculators and also have the added benefit of printing off every calculation so you can double-check your work later. Although the extra features may seem confusing at first, they will become much more clear with a little practice.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the key corresponding to the first number that you need to use to perform a mathematical calculation. Press either the "-" or "+" key if you need to add or subtract from that number and then press the key for the number that you will be adding or subtracting. Do not read the result as the correct total, but instead press the "Total" key to have the correct result displayed on the screen and printed on the paper roll.

    • 2

Use the "/" and "x" keys for division and multiplication just as you would with any other type of calculator. Do not press the "Total" key to get the correct result as a printing calculator automatically divides and multiplies correctly.

    • 3

Use the "M+" button to store the current value on the screen into the calculator's memory so that you can use it later. Press the button again later to add that value to whatever number is on the screen, or instead press the "M-" button to subtract that value from the current number on the screen. Press the "M*" key to remove the number from memory so that you can add a different one in later with the "M+" button again.

    • 4

Use the key with a picture of an arrow facing upwards to create a blank line on the paper roll to make your calculations easier to read.

    • 5

Use the key with an arrow facing to the right to delete the last number you entered from the calculator's memory.

    • 6

Press the "#" button followed by any other number to have that number printed on the paper roll but not entered into the calculator's memory.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can change the number of decimal places that the calculator shows on the paper roll by pressing the button that shows a plus sign followed by a string of consecutive numbers.

  • The "Clear" button, which is usually denoted by a "C" or "CE," will remove any numbers on the calculator's screen but won't actually clear out the last mathematical operator key that you pressed.
