How to Measure for a Screen Door

Standard screen doors come in standard sizes, ranging from 30"x 81" to 36"x 85". One of these standard sizes will fit in most doorways. Measure for your screen door before you shop. If your doorway is smaller or larger than standard size screen doors, you'll need to special order one. Does this Spark an idea?

      Measure width of door opening. Measure the width of the outside door jamb in three different locations: top, middle and bottom of door. Record the smallest measurement of the three.

      Measure height of door opening from the trim at the top of opening to the sill at the bottom. Take a measurement from the right, center, and left side of the opening. Record the smallest measurement of the three.

      Determine if door is right- or left-handed. Stand outside of house. If the door handle is on your right, the door is right-handed. If the handle is on the left, it is a left-handed door.

      Order or purchase your screen door based on the smallest width and height measurements.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have an existing screen door, simply measure it to determine the correct size replacement door.

  • Do not measure at the same spot that the interior door is installed. Measure the doorway outside of the doorjamb.
