Instructions

  1. Welding the Screen

    • 1

Measure for height and width. The fireplace screen should be slightly higher and wider than the fireplace opening itself; how much bigger is a matter of preference. If you have a large, sturdy hearth, then you can make your screen larger to match the hearth proportions.

    • 2

Weld the frame out of thin iron rods into a rectangular shape to fit your measurements.

    • 3

Fill the frame with curves, curls and other designs. Use the same type of iron rods or another, smaller metal rod to create twisted and curved shapes, then weld those shapes free-form onto the frame and to each other until you fill the frame.

    • 4

Top the frame with a curved iron piece for a more finished look.

    Using Tree Branches

    • 5

Create a frame out of semi-straight tree branches. Use birch or sycamore for their white bark and sweet smell, if you have some available. Choose pieces that are straight to create a rectangular frame.

    • 6

Create cross pieces from smaller tree branches. You can install them horizontally or diagonally across the frame. Use nails or wire to secure the cross pieces to the frame.

    • 7

Weave in grapevine around the cross pieces and the frame to fill the interior space of the fireplace screen. Use smaller pieces of grapevine to cover the nails or wire used to attach the branches to each other.
