Imagine the freedom of being able to carry your entire operating system in your pocket. In a few short steps, you'll have an ultra-portable means of taking your work with you. With Knoppix on your memory stick, you'll have a powerful (but efficient) operating system on your keychain. Never get stuck without that document or presentation again, and forget about those compatibility issues because you have your operating system with you.
Knoppix is an easy-to-use operating system that reminds you of the Windows environment. It will only take you minutes to feel comfortable working in it. Some of the useful software packages it includes is Open Office, video and music players, as well as many helpful tools for trouble-shooting computer problems.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 8GB (or larger) flash drive Knoppix 6.0.1 ISO Windows Vista PC CD Burner Software to write an ISO image
  1. Step 1

Download the Knoppix 6.0.1 ISO image. There are several mirror sites available from the official Knoppix website. A link is provided in the Resources section of this article.

  2. Step 2

Burn the Knoppix image file onto a CD. If you do not have software for burning ISO images, there are several free options online. One particular program that supports Vista is ISO Recorder v3, which can be found in the Resources section of this article.

  3. Step 3

After burning the ISO image to a CD, make sure the USB flash drive is plugged into the computer. Reboot the machine. If your computer does not boot to the CD automatically, you may need to change your boot menu settings.

  4. Step 4

When the Adriane menu appears, select "Setup" and press "Enter."

  5. Step 5

In the Adriane Setup menu, select "Store on Flashdisk" and press "Enter."

  6. Step 6

When you have finished completing the remaining on-screen prompts, eject the CD and restart your computer.

  7. Step 7

Enter the boot menu and set your USB drive as the primary boot option. Your computer will now boot off of the USB drive into Knoppix 6.0.1.

Tips & Warnings
  • Entering the boot menu on most Windows Vista machines is achieved by pressing "F12" while the system boot image is displayed. Your particular machine should display instructions for entering the boot menu during startup.
  • Changing settings in your boot or BIOS menu can potentially harm your computer.
