1. 

   Install tall double doors to an outside patio. Finish the doors in dark wood and hang gauzy floor-length drapes. Doors and windows are frequently left open in Mediterranean villages.

2. 

   Finish windows with dark wood interior shutters with wide slats.

3. 

   Apply Venetian plaster or stucco to the walls. Use colors like burnt orange, bright yellow and deep blue.

4. 

   Hang a decorative tapestry from a wrought iron rod or decorate with mirrors and oil paintings.

5. 

   Create a Mediterranean-style floor by laying tile in terracotta or red brick colors. Accent the tile with a colorful mosaic border.

6. 

   Use furnishings made of rich, dark woods. Decorate with terracotta pots, wrought iron accessories like candelabras and brushed copper vases. Use side chairs with cane seats.

7. 

   Toss colorful throw pillows that complement the wall color on sofas and chairs.
