Lots of parents enjoy dressing up their baby girls and giving them pretty hairdos. Babies need baby hair clips to gently hold their fine wisps of hair. Tiny ribbon bows, character buttons and other decorations will highlight the small hair clips. It is important to have a lightweight, safe piece to put in the baby's hair.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1/4-inch long hair clips 1/4-inch wide ribbon 1/2-inch wide lace 1/2-inch wide silk flower blossom Thread and needle
  1. Step 1

Cut the end of the lace on a slant. Thread the needle and knot the doubled thread.

  2. Step 2

Insert a needle into the straight side of the lace as shown. Make tiny gathering stitches down the length of the lace. A gathering stitch goes in and out through the ribbon in a straight line. You can work the needle into the lace without pulling the thread through.

  3. Step 3

Pull on the thread and gather the lace into a circle. Stitch more if you need a larger circle. It should be at least an inch wide.

  4. Step 4

Hold the circle of lace and sew a small stitch into the back. Stitch into the stitch two or three more times to knot and hold the lace circle securely.

  5. Step 5

Remove the plastic center from a small baby's breath silk flower. Stitch each blossom petal to the center of the lace circle.

  6. Step 6

Open the half-inch hair clip. Place it under the center of the lace round and stitch the long back portion of the clip to the lace. You must knot the thread end and push the needle into the lace. Pull the thread through the ribbon and insert it through the center of the double opening on the barrette. Come back through the opening so that the thread is wrapped around the bar on one side.
Stitch back into the ribbon and pull the thread out to wrap around the other side bar on the barrette. Continue stitching until the ribbon circle is taut to the barrette top. Stitch into the last stitch three times before cutting the thread.

  7. Step 7

Cut a four inch long piece of 1/4-inch-wide satin ribbon.

  8. Step 8

Make a loop up to half an inch long.

  9. Step 9

Twist the ribbon and form a loop on the opposite side of the first loop.

  10. Step 10

Continue twisting the ribbon and making loops until you have ten to fourteen of them. Wrap the four inch piece of ribbon around the center of the bow. Tie the ends tightly to secure the bow.

  11. Step 11

Double knot the piece at the back of the bow. Sew the bow to the bottom of the lace round with a few stitches in one place. Trim the ends of the ribbon on a slant.

Tips & Warnings
  • Sew the parts on a baby hair clip. Glue can let go if a baby puts the hair clip in her mouth. You can use a character button, animal patch or satin ribbon rose in place of a silk flower.
  • Do not use bobby pins or any material a baby could choke on if she gets the clip out of her hair and into her mouth.
