How to Engrave Steel

Engraving is the technique of etching a message into an object. Engraving metal is a great way to send a personal message, mark ownership, or create a custom design. Engraving is usually a custom option with a high price tag, but doing it at home is relatively inexpensive because it only takes a few items purchased from the local craft or hardware store.

Instructions

    • 1

Melt the wax in a pot on the stove, stirring occasionally until it is smooth. You can also melt the wax in a microwave safe bowl or container: Run the microwave on high for 30 seconds, stir and repeat until the wax is smooth.

    • 2

Dip the steel in the wax. If it is a large piece of steel, pour the wax over the area to be engraved. The wax will protect the steel from the acid.

    • 3

Place the steel on the sheet pan. Allow the wax to harden. It should be close to its original consistency.

    • 4

Use the tip of the nail to engrave your message. You will be writing in the wax. The tip should be lightly scratching the steel.

    • 5

Put on the safety goggles and a pair of thick rubber gloves. Do not use latex gloves, as they are too thin. Yellow gloves that are used for dish washing work well.

    • 6

Pour the etching acid by squirting it over the engraved area on the wax. Keeping the steel in the sheet pan will keep the acid from spilling out. If it is a large piece of steel, place a few folded layers of paper towels around the area where the acid will be poured. This will soak up any acid that spills off the waxed area. Allow it to sit for approximately 10 minutes.

    • 7

Use a wooden stick to scrape off the wax into a plastic trash bag. With the gloves still on, throw the paper towels in the bag as well. Place the steel under running water, and use a stiff brush to clean off any residue. If the steel is large, take it outside and use a garden hose, or use a bucket of warm water and dip the brush in it to scrub the area. Wipe dry with a cloth towel.

Tips & Warnings

  • Have someone with nice handwriting do the engraving.

  • Work in a well ventilated area. If acid gets into your eyes, flush immediately with water and call a doctor.
