While there is no safe way to extinguish a fire in a fireplace, there are a few things you can do to ensure the safety of your home if it becomes necessary for you to leave while a fire is burning in your fireplace.

      Spread out the logs and embers. Use the fireplace poker to keep the logs and embers separate from one another.

      Bank the fire. Use the small fireplace shovel and bury the flaming logs and smoldering embers with the ashes from the bottom of the fireplace. This will not completely extinguish the smoldering embers, but will cause them to slowly die out. It will extinguish the active flames.

      Pour a bucket of sand over the fire. This has essentially the same effect as burying the embers with ashes. You'll need to clean the sand out of the fireplace before lighting another fire.

      Close the glass fireplace doors or place fireplace screen over the opening.
