Did you just welcome a stray kitten into your home and discover that it is infested with fleas? Traditional flea powders and other chemicals are too harsh, and even dangerous, to use on kittens under six weeks of age. A flea infestation can cause life-threatening anemia in kittens. So it is imperative that you treat your new household member immediately. By using a flea comb and a gentle dishwashing soap, you will be able to rid the kitten of fleas and protect its health.

Fill a sink with warm water. Test the temperature to make sure that it is safe for the kitten, who has very delicate skin. Gently immerse the kitten's body into the water to fully saturate its fur. Wet its face and head with a damp wash cloth.

Remove the kitten from the sink and place it on a towel. Massage Dawn soap into its fur, creating a lather. Make sure to massage behind its ears and under its chin. Be careful not to get soap into its eyes.

    • 3

Place the lathered-up kitten back into the sink of warm water. Massage its body, making sure to remove all of the soap from its fur.

    • 4

Remove the kitten from the sink and place it onto a dry towel. Wrap the kitten up and gently pat its body, drying his fur thoroughly. Kittens are very sensitive to temperature and it is important that they don't get too cold.

Rub the flea comb with Vaseline before using it, to you catch more fleas. Go over the kitten's body with a flea comb after the bath to remove any remaining fleas. You can also use your fingers to pick off fleas, dropping them into a cup of hot water to kill them.
