How to Make Buttermilk Out of Yogurt
Adding buttermilk to a recipe such as pancakes, biscuits or bread creates a product that is light and fluffy as well as packed with good nutrients.
Adding buttermilk to your weekly shopping list can sometimes prove to be an unnecessary cooking expense. However, you can make your own buttermilk out of two basic ingredients. Not only will this recipe produce homemade buttermilk, it will also create a bowl full of homemade butter.

Read labels. When searching your grocer's dairy aisle for the ingredients, be sure to purchase products that do not contain additives or preservatives.

Mix. In a large glass bowl, pour the quart of cream and measure 1/3 cup of yogurt. Mix gently by hand, using a whisk.

Cover. Using plastic wrap, cover the bowl and set on the counter overnight.

Whisk. Once the cream thickens, use a whisk to gently break up the mixture.

Use mixer. Set the electric mixer to the lowest speed. Mix the cream until soft peaks begin to form. After mixing for a few minutes, the milk will separate from the butter.

Transfer. Place a large sieve over the second mixing bowl. Carefully pour the contents into the sieve, to separate the buttermilk from the butter.

Press. Using a heavy spoon, press the mound of butter until all of the milk has been drained from it. This recipe should produce 2 cups of buttermilk.

Rinse. Using cold water, rinse the butter until the water runs clear.

Tips & Warnings
You may want to pour the buttermilk into the sieve for a second time to remove any small particles of butter.
Never use a plastic mixing bowl when making buttermilk. Plastic may harbor bacteria that could contaminate the cream.
