How to Make Your Eyebrows Thicker

As we age, our eyebrows have a tendency to get thinner. Excessive plucking and hair removal, chemotherapy, certain medications, burns, poor nutrition, genetics or simply an eyebrow trim gone wrong are all factors that contribute to thin eyebrows. There are several approaches to thickening eyebrows--treatments range from natural solutions to makeup tricks to costly cosmetic procedures.

1. Get cosmetic eyebrow treatments. These are similar to hair transplants in that hair is removed from other parts of your body (usually your head) and surgically implanted. The new implanted follicles go through a healing period when they are accepted by the body and begin to grow or are rejected and the procedure repeated. These treatments can be costly and painful, but also show positive results. See the Resource section for more information on cosmetic eyebrow treatments.

2. Use makeup to create the illusion of fuller eyebrows. This is the easiest and most inexpensive way to make your eyebrows thicker. Choose a brown eyebrow or eyeliner pencil and delicately add color to thinned areas. This works best when done subtly, unless you prefer the painted-on look. Some women prefer a clean slate, shaving or waxing off their entire eyebrow to pencil in a new one. Stick to brown tones when filling in eyebrows for the most authentic look, even if you have black hair. A dark brown will create a fuller=looking effect. 3. Try a natural remedy. Many people say that rubbing Castor and olive oil on their eyebrows causes thickening over time. The most common natural remedy is nutritional supplementation. There are several brands of nutritional supplements on the market advertised specifically to make hair and nails grow. They usually contain calcium, vitamin A and vitamin E. You can also eat foods rich in these vitamins.

4. Use a topical solution. There are many topical solutions on the market aimed at spurring hair growth, mainly on the head, but some are gaining ground in the beauty arena for their facial hair thickening affects. One such treatment is Rogaine, which works by plumping and stimulating the hair follicle to spur growth. See the Resources section for more information on Rogaine.
