How to Make Mosquito Traps

The outdoors can be a place of complete serenity, or of complete irritation. Mosquitoes can invade your outdoor space, making it uncomfortable or even unusable. There are many toxic sprays and electronic devices on the market today to help with this problem. But, if you have pets, kids or a concern for the environment, you may want to explore a more low-cost, environmentally friendly method of control. A mosquito trap is a solution that you can make yourself out of household items to help keep your outdoor space a little more user-friendly. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 2-liter drink bottle 2 cups warm water 1 cup sugar 1 package yeast Glue Black construction paper

Instructions

    • 1

      Remove the lid from your empty 2-liter drink bottle. Save the lid for collection later.

      Pour 1 cup of sugar into the bottle. Add the warm water and shake to dissolve the sugar in your water.

      Add a package of yeast to the sugar water mixture.

    • 4

      Apply glue liberally to the outside of your bottle trap. Press a piece of black construction paper to the glue to block the sun from the inside of the trap.

      Place your trap in a damp, out of the way place. Cap, collect and replace the trap every 1 to 2 weeks as necessary during mosquito season.

Tips & Warnings

  • After collection you can place your trap in the freezer to dispatch the mosquitoes. Then toss the bottle into the recycling bin.
