Australia is a developed nation, about equal in land area to the United States, but with a population of about 22 million people. The economy has grown for the last 17 years, and the unemployment rate in 2008 was 4.2 percent. Australian cities including Melbourne, Perth and Sydney consistently rank highly in livability rankings and support millions of jobs.

      Determine your eligibility for working in Australia. To be eligible to work in Australia, you must be an Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident, a New Zealand citizen or a foreigner with a work visa.       Decide what field or fields you want to search for work in. Usually, you will search for a career similar to the one you are in. If you are looking for a new career, consider taking some career quizzes to see what careers would be a good fit for you. More information can be found in the resource section below.

      Update your resume. Your Australian resume needs to be concise and include work experience relevant to the job you are searching for. See the Resources section below for more information about how to make an Australian resume.

      Search Australian career search engines. When searching use keywords describing your field or browse through topic areas. For instance, if you are a mortgage broker you could search "mortgage" as a keyword or browse in the "banking" category. Australian job search engines inlcude careerone.com.au, jobs.ozfreeonline.com, and www.seek.com.au. The government job search engine is https://jobsearch.gov.au.

      Submit your resume to job openings you have found via the career search engines. Each search engine will provide a different way of submission; however, in all you can upload a copy of your resume if it is in .pdf or .doc format.

  • If you know someone in Australia in the field you want to work in, contact him and find out how he got his job.

  • Depending on the economy, jobs in Australia may be difficult to find. It is generally unwise to move to a new city or country if you do not have the funds to afford living there.
