Wrap a Fancy Gift

Cloth gift-wrapping is a sure-fire way to make sure your gift stands out. Keep the process simple---you won't even need tape for this project. The technique presented here, putting the gift in a container and box and wrapping it all with a scarf---will call attention to your gift without taking too much of time and effort.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Scarf or decorative fabric remnant Container Gift box Tissue paper Gift card
  1. Step 1

Find a container that complements the gift. If you're giving a piece of jewelry, for example, present it in a carved wooden box, or if it's perfume or makeup, put it in a cosmetics bag. If there are several parts to your gift, carefully wrap each one in tissue paper before placing them in the container.

  2. Step 2

Get a sturdy protective gift box. It should be the appropriate size so your present does not rattle about. The box itself need not be fancy; it can be a plain brown recycled box, as this will not the first thing your recipient will see.

  3. Step 3

Shop for a scarf that matches the occasion and complements the personality of your recipient. Gauge its size on the size of your gift, as the scarf has to be considerably bigger. Lay the scarf down on a flat surface. Place your boxed gift in the center of the cloth. Join together two of the ends diagonal from each other so they meet over the box. Create a secure knot and then another with these two ends. Repeat the process with the two remaining ends also diagonal from each other. This time, after knotting once, you may create a ribbon out of the ends instead of simply knotting again (see Resources for a video on cloth gift-wrapping). Now your gift is snugly wrapped in a stunning piece of cloth.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure the cloth you are using is sturdy but fine enough to knot; a thick fabric would be too bulky. In addition, the cloth should not be too slippery, or it will be hard to knot or come undone.
