Snowflake lights add an enchanting touch to holiday decor. The paper snowflakes work like mini lampshades to provide a room full of warm, diffused light that creates a calming atmosphere. Designer snowflake lights sell in holiday shops with a big price tag, but they are simple to handcraft at home. Snowflake lights can even be a great project for children to complete at home as part of a holiday decorating tradition. The process is simple and straightforward and the results are stunning.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paper Scissors Rubber cement 1 string white Christmas lights Glitter (optional)
  1. Step 1

Count how many lights are on your string and multiply that number by two. That's how many snowflakes you will need. You can make each kind of snowflake as unique as you like, but each snowflake needs to have an exact matching twin. For example, if your string has 12 lights on it, you will need 12 pairs of paper snowflakes, or 24 snowflakes. See the resources section for instructions on how to make paper snowflakes. You want them to be no larger than about 4 inches across.

  2. Step 2

Once your have all of your paper snowflakes cut out, apply glitter to each one. This helps reflect the light and makes a shiny, more festive looking set of lights. This step is optional but adds a lot of interest to your snowflake lights. The best kind of glitter to use for these is a spray-on glitter in opaque. It's subtle but effective. Allow the glitter to dry completely before moving on.

  3. Step 3

On a flat, protected surface, coat each side of your snowflakes with a layer of rubber cement and let dry. This creates a surface that can be stuck together or removed for repositioning.

  4. Step 4

Take your first pair of snowflakes and find the first light on your string. Line the light up in the middle of your snowflake, or in whatever position you think looks best, and press the two flakes together. Make sure the snowflakes are aligned right so they look like one snowflake. If you are having trouble getting your snowflakes to stick, it just means you didn't use enough rubber cement, so use the included brush to add a little more.

  5. Step 5

Continue this process with each light and each pair of snowflakes until you have moved down the entire string of lights. Plug in the lights when all the glue is dry to see the beautiful effect you have created.
