Cast on the stitches. You will need a medium-weight yarn, not too thick or too thin. Hold a yarn ball out in front of your and let the string of yarn hang down. Grab the yarn using your right hand, palm out and hold it in your thumb. Now, turn your hand while holding the yarn so that you can see your palm. Stick the end of the circular knitting needle into the hole you have created and pull the string tighter. This is casting on one stitch. You will repeat this process until you have cast on 60 stitches.

Start knitting. Knit around the circular needles until you have knitted about 6 to 7 inches in length. You can measure with a ruler to see if you have knitted enough length, or you can stretch you hand out and measure from your thumb to your pinky finger. This is an important step because if you make the length too short, the hat will not fit onto your head.

Decrease the stitches. After you have 6 to 7 inches in length, start to decrease the stitches by knitting two stitches together every 2 stitches. Do this for one row, and then knit the next row normally. Alternate your rows, one knitting two together every 2 stitches, and one normal, until you have only 10 stitches left. Pull a length of yarn about 12 inches and break it off. Weave this string of yarn through the stitches and pull so that all of the 10 stitches are gathered together. Knot the end by tying the string onto another stitch. Try on your new hat, and you're finished.
