How to Make Ventrilo Work With Dial Up

Ventrilo is a voice over internet protocol (VOiP) software developed by Flagship Industries. The software offers free audio chatting to multiple people. There is also a paid tier of the software called "Pro," which allows users to act as their own "channel" or server. With the popularity of cooperative online gaming, the need for real-time communication has become increasingly important. From managing an organized event in a game to simply talking with a relative, the uses for this technology are limitless. However, many of us access the Internet through dial-up modems, well-known for their lackluster speed. This article will instruct you on how to install and configure Ventrilo to use the least amount of bandwidth, to better enable it to be used with a dial-up connection.

Things You'll Need

  • External mic and earphones or headset (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Open your Web browser and go to the official Ventrilo website (see Resources below). Download the installer.

    • 2

Once completed, double-click on the downloaded installer. Follow the instructions to complete the installation and open the Ventrilo program.

    • 3

Attempt to join a server through the program. Incoming and outgoing audio streams from your computer may be broken and unrecognizable due to your slow connection. If this is the case, open the "Options" menu in the program.

    • 4

In the options menu, locate and find the value for "Sample Rate" and "Codec". The default configuration for these settings should be "GSM 6.10" and "11 Khz", respectively. Reduce the sample rate to a lower setting and choose a lower quality codec. Save your preferences.

    • 5

Restart the program. Attempt to join another server--the voice quality should now be at least understandable.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are considering using Ventrilo for online gaming purposes, it is advisable to upgrade to a faster Internet connection. Ventrilo will use much of your current bandwidth on dial up, leaving very little for other applications. You may want to use an external microphone and headsets, since built-in laptop or computer devices are usually too weak or of such poor quality that they're unable to transmit and receive audio clearly.

  • When using a lower sample and codec quality, users you might try to converse with will need to use the same settings. The more people using a server, the more bandwidth per person is required; thus, your connection may not be able to handle too many people, regardless of your settings.
