How to Make a Scented Animal Rice Bag

If you are looking for that perfect gift for a child, making a scented animal rice bag is a great choice. Scented animal rice bags, which are lightly scented with lavender essential oil, are designed to be hidden inside a pillow to help a child fall asleep. The aroma of the lavender in the rice bag soothes the child and calms her nervous system, making her more relaxed. Making one of these scented animal rice bags is easy.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 square foot of cloth 1 1/2 cups dry rice 5 drops lavender essential oil Needle and thread Scissors Pencil Funnel

Start by folding your cloth in half, so that one side of the cloth has a fold in it. Now, decide what animal you want to make. Draw the animal on the cloth with a pencil. Choose an animal or a design that does not have deep curves. The more simple the design, the easier it will be to sew. Cut out the shape with a pair of scissors. Make sure that you cut the shape out of both sides of the cloth so that you have two identical pieces.

Next, take your needle and thread and sew along the edge of the animal using tiny stitches. The smaller you make your stitches, the less likely it will be for the rice to get loose and leak out. Sew around the animal leaving about 2 inches unsewn. Then, tie off the thread and turn the animal inside out so that the seams are on the inside. Stick your finger in the unsewn part of the bag and push out any creases or areas that are folded.

Now you will fill the bag with rice. Using a funnel, stick the small end into the hole and carefully pour the rice into the top. If you do not have a funnel, you can make one by rolling up a piece of paper into a cone shape. After the rice is in your bag, add 5 drops of lavender essential oil onto the rice. Turning the edges in, carefully sew the 2-inch hole using tiny stitches.
