As the choice medium for music playback has shifted from LPs, tapes and CDs to digital playback from computer stored data, translation of file extensions often becomes an issue. For instance, iTunes downloads come as mp4 files, while many players and phones may require mp3 or WMA format audio files. In order to turn an mp4 into a different format, a simple conversion process is necessary.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Audio file conversion program
  1. Step 1

Locate and download an audio conversion program that handles the type of conversion you need. Some converters are very specific; for instance, one might only convert mp4 to mp3. Others may be able to convert many different types of files. There are many free and pay-to-use converters but typically a free converter can be found and downloaded for any converting needs. (See Resources for a free basic converter download).

  2. Step 2

Install and your audio file converter program.

  3. Step 3

Load the audio file that you want to convert into the converter program. You will probably have to browse for the file by clicking "open" under the "file" drop down menu, although some conversion tools allow you to drag and drop audio files straight into the program.

  4. Step 4

Choose to convert the file. After the file is loaded, you will need to start the conversion process by selecting to convert the file. There should be a convert command either right on the main user interface of the program or under one of the drop down menus of the program.

  5. Step 5

Select the type of output file you want. Since most converters can output more than one file extension, select wma or mp3 as the conversion output as necessary.

  6. Step 6

Click OK to convert the file.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many pay-to-use conversion programs have free trials you can use for one time conversion needs. Unless you are have advanced audio needs, there is no reason to pay for an audio file conversion program; plenty of basic free programs are available. Some editing audio programs may be able to load mp4 files and save tracks as wma or mp3.
