As the PlayStation 2 game console ages, some of your old game discs may not be in the best condition any more. Normal wear and tear, as well as dust or frequent handling can damage your PlayStation 2 disc, but there are plenty of practical ways to fix superfluous issues with your PlayStation 2 video game.

Things You'll Need:

  • Eyeglass cleaning solution Lint-free napkins Game disc cleaner Buff solution
  1. Step 1

Thoroughly clean the disc with cool water, and wipe it dry with a lint-free cloth. It is very important to make sure that any particulates, such as dirt or dust have been removed prior to wiping the disc dry, as these could cause further damage to the disc if rubbed in.

  2. Step 2

Use a specialty disc-repair device to remove the top layer of the disc. These devices are common in electronics stores, and are relatively inexpensive. Although they do remove the top layer of the disc, this also removes any surface scratches that are hindering the disc from functioning properly. However, since the top layer has been removed, the disc is now very susceptible to future scratches, so it is very important to take good care of it once you have run it through the machine.

  3. Step 3

Clean the disc again, but instead of using cool water, use eyeglass cleaning solution. This solution, when applied gently, will remove any smudges that were incurred as a result of the layer removal process as well as remove any particulates that gathered in deeper scratches.

  4. Step 4

Buff out deep scratches. If you removed the top layer and still see scratches, you can fill them in by using a specialty disc buffer (see Resources below). You can also use Turtle Wax.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your disc has very deep scratches, it is important not to try and run the disc in your PlayStation 2 until these issues have been resolved, as particulates in heavily scratched discs can bounce off and damage the PlayStation 2's inner mechanisms.
