How to Become a Physical Therapist in Sports Medicine

Physical therapists specializing in sports medicine work with patients to recover from sports-related injuries. These professionals work with both recreational and professional athletes. But to launch your career as a sports medicine physical therapist, you must earn a minimum of a master's degree in physical therapy, with an emphasis in sports medicine, and pass your state exam.

  1. Step 1

    Enroll in a sports medicine physical therapy program.Sports medicine physical therapists must have a minimum of a master's degree in physical therapy, but a doctoral degree is becoming preferred. A master's degree in physical therapy for sports medicine takes two years to complete and a doctoral degree takes three years. To find programs accredited by the American Physical Therapy Association, visit their website (see Resources).

  2. Step 2

    Determine licensing requirements in your state. Most states require sports medicine physical therapists to be licensed. This typically includes completing an application and taking an exam administered by the state. Contact your state licensing department for procedures in your area.

  3. Step 3

    Seek internships in a sports medicine physical therapy office. While completing your master's program, seek internships in a sports medicine physical therapy office. This will make you more appealing to potential employers, and provide networking opportunities.

  4. Step 4

    Join the American Physical Therapy Association. This will give you access to continuing education opportunities, and allow you to meet other professionals in your area. Plus, some employers prefer candidates who are members of this professional association.

    Secure a sports medicine physical therapy position. These positions are listed at the job section of the American Physical Therapy Association; but you can also check out mainstream job boards like Indeed and Monster.
