Instructions

    • 1

Open Microsoft Works. The "Task Launcher" will open and give you a set of options. Choose "Templates" to open the template manager and select the "Home and Money" category.

    • 2

Choose the "Journals" category from "Home and Money." Works gives you five template choices. Choose the personal journal. You'll use this as the base template for your book cover.

    • 3

Select the personal journal template and click the "Use This Style" link above the personal journal preview. The "Task Launcher" will open the template in Microsoft Works.

    • 4

Delete the second page of the document. Select the text in the document that says "Personal Journal of Name" and replace it with the title of your book or manuscript. Choose the basic Courier or Times New Roman font from the drop-down font menu on the tool bar and set the point size to 36 if you plan to send this to a publisher. You can use any font or font color you like if this is a personal book.

    • 5

Hit "Enter" and drop down two lines. Format the font to 12 and type the word "by," then hit "Enter" again and type your name. This is the format for a professional cover. Go to the "File" menu and choose "Save As." Works gives you the option to save your document as a template so it will appear as an option in your template manager the next time you need it.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also make a book cover in Works by starting a blank document, centering the cursor vertically and horizontally on the page, and formatting the text as described. Works has several templates for recipe book covers.
