How to Properly Fill Out a RSVP Card

RSVP (repondez s'il vous plait) is a host's polite way of asking for a response to an invitation. For any event or party there is a menu to plan as well as seating arrangements to consider. In an attempt to be organized and have a good idea of the number of guests that may attend, the host often includes a request for a RSVP. Responding to a RSVP request can save the host of an event or party a lot of unnecessary work and expense.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the invitation for RSVP information as soon as the invitation is received. If the host or hostess is asking for an RSVP, they will probably have included this information. There are two common options for responding to an invitation: 1) the invitation itself may include a RSVP card and envelope or 2) the invitation lists a phone number with which to RSVP.

    • 2

Examine the invitation carefully for what type of event is being hosted and who is being invited to the event. If it is addressed to "John Doe," then only John Doe is invited. If it is addressed to "John Doe and friend," then you are welcome to bring along one friend. The invitation may also indicate other specifications such as "John Doe and Family" or "Mr. and Mrs. John Doe," which indicates no children are invited.

    • 3

Respond to the invitation in a timely manner. Don't delay. As soon as you decide whether or not you will attend, let the host know so that they can finalize their event plans. If you are planning to attend, the RSVP should include who, if anyone, will be accompanying you.

    • 4

Decline the invitation by checking "Will not attend." It is also customary to let the host know how much you regret not being able to attend with a short note. The reason you will not attend is not required.

    • 5

Accept the invitation by checking "Will Attend." When accepting an invitation, let the hosts know who will be attending the event with you. Again, please don't take it upon yourself to invite others. If you would like to invite someone not listed on the invitation, contact the host and discuss it with them.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you know you are not planning to attend an event, please RSVP within three days.

  • Do not assume an invitation is open to guests.
