How to Make a Denim Jeans Handbag
Denim jeans handbags first became popular in the 1960s and continue to be a fun bag for casual occasions. They are simple to make and can be any size from almost clutch-size to a large tote. Basic sewing machine skills and an old pair of jeans are all that is needed to complete this project in an afternoon. After the bag is made, you can decorate the handbag by adding fabric paints or other trim, if desired. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Choose a pair of jeans that when laid flat are the approximate size of the bag you want to make. Jeans for a baby will make a small purse, while a large man's jeans will make a large tote style handbag.
-
2
Turn the jeans inside out and lay on a flat surface. Button the fly and zip up the zipper.

-
3
Use the scissors and cut the legs off the jeans 1 inch below the crotch seam. Set the legs of the jeans aside.
-
4
Sew a double seam into each leg hole even with the existing crotch seam.
-
5
Sew one side of the Velcro strip to the back waistband of the jeans. Sew the other part of the Velcro strip to the front waistband. This will securely close your handbag while in use.
-
6
Turn the handbag right side out.

Make a strap for your handbag using the material from the cut-off legs. If the legs are from adult sized jeans, only one leg may be needed. Cut this to the desired width, and sew a seam on the cut edge. Turn the strap right side out and sew each end to the inside of the opposite sides of the handbag. With children's jeans you may need to sew both legs together end to end to make a strap long enough.

Decorate your handbag if desired with fabric paints, lace or other fabric trim.
