Nothing says fashion like a fun purse. You can make your own one-of-a-kind pocketbook out of a pair of new or used jeans. If you can sew or glue a seam, it's easy to make a pocketbook out of a pair of bluejeans.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pair of bluejeans to cut up Sewing machine, needle and thread, or fabric glue Iron and ironing board Embellishments (beads, charms, jewels, etc., if desired)
  1. Step 1

Button up the jeans and zip the zipper.

  2. Step 2

Cut the legs off. Cut along an imaginary line below the zipper and above the point where the crotch seam meets the inner leg seams. Set the legs aside for now.

  3. Step 3

Turn the top part of the bluejeans inside out. Pin along the cut edge. Sew a seam along the cut edge by hand or by machine. If you prefer, glue the seam with fabric glue. Allow glue to dry thoroughly according to the manufacturer's instructions. Turn "pocketbook" right side out.

  4. Step 4

Cut strap. Use one of the legs you cut off in Step 2. Cut a strip that is the entire length of the cut off leg and 3 inches wide.

  5. Step 5

Place strip on table with wrong side of fabric facing you. Fold over the edge of each long side to make a 1/2-inch hem. Press the hem.

  6. Step 6

Fold the strip in half lengthwise, matching up the folded over edges. Pin.

  7. Step 7

Sew together the strip. Run the seam about 1/8 inch from the pinned edge. Remove pins. Again, you can glue the seam with fabric glue. Let glue dry thoroughly.

  8. Step 8

Pin each end of the strap to inside of waistband at the side seams.

  9. Step 9

Put the purse on your shoulder and determine how long you want your strap to be. If you like a long strap, leave it as it is. Otherwise, cut off the strap to the length you want.

  10. Step 10

Sew the ends of the strap to the inside of the waistband at the side seams. You can glue the strap on, but let the glue dry thoroughly before using the pocketbook.

  11. Step 11

Embellish your bluejean pocketbook: Put a belt in the belt loops, stitch on decorative embroidery designs, place a folded handkerchief or bandanna in the back pocket, or add beads, craft jewels or charms.

Tips & Warnings
  • If desired, run a line of stitching along the zipper placket so it doesn't open accidentally.
